Guilty Pleasure Portugieser Wine

The first Portugieser Du Monde wine competition and festival took place in April on the 12th and 13th at the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in the city of Pécs, European Capital of Culture in 2010. The competition was the first day in Villány, in the Bock Winery where international jury from Hungary, Croatia, Chile, Poland and Slovenia judge wines from three categories: young Portugiesers (vintage of 2012); vintage Portugiesers (vintages 2011 or earlier) and blends with a min. 25 percent Portugieser-content.

Portugieser is an essential and important grape variety in Central Europe, it is however rarely celebrated in the world of wines. To avoid keeping Portugieser in the background, the wine magazin Pécsi Borozó organized the event.

For some poeple Portugieser is known as “wine without big words” but for me it has many faces, from young to much more serious. After this event I can admit, Portugieser is my Guilty Pleasure Wine.

P.s. Cabernet Franc was another great Hungarian wine discovery.

My TOP Portugieser at Festival

    • Villányi Portugieser 2012, dry, 13%, Janus (Janusbor.hu), Hungary

    • PortaGéza Selection 2012, dry, Bock Winery, Villány, Hungary

    • The Champion Prize was awarded to the wine Ruppert Ákos Villányi Portugieser 2012.

    • The category of vintage Portugiesers (vintages 2011 or earlier) saw the triumph of a true “bio-wine”, the Wassmann Bormanufaktúra Villányi Portugieser 2011 (which also won the absolute ranking with the highest number of points).
