Where: Palača Manzioli, Izola, Slovenia

When: 10. Februar 2014

What: Svet refoška – The World of Refosco

World of Refosco is the name of the event which was for the first time in Izola, the town who is hosting Orange Wine festival in april. Refosco is in Slovenia the most represented variety of Slovenska Istra Wine District (Refošk) and Kras Wine District (Teran) - Primorska Wine Region. A lot of it also grows in the nearby wine-growing regions in neighbouring countries northern Italy and Croatia – Istria. We were told at the Syposium that it is a historical variety, which gives recognizable traditional wine. There are 6 varieties of refosco family, only 3 of them are used in everyday winemaking and we had a chance to taste at festival more than 120 samples of - Istrski Refošk (Refošk - Refosco), Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Refosco di Faedis. First one is more robust, wild, with higher acidity the second and the third are more mild, with higher tanins. Both of them are interesting to discover.

Did you know that the Refosco is in Slovenia best-selling varietal wine. On the show there were 45 wineries. Organizers count more than 350 winelovers, buyers, retailers, caterers mostly from Italy and Slovenia.

Using ampelography and DNA profiling distinguished six varieties among the Refosco: Istrski Refošk (Refosco di Istria), Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Refosco di Faedis, Refosco di Rauscedo, Refosco del Botton, Refosco di Guarnieri.
