Where: Svečina, Slovenia

When: 27th of September, 2014

What: 33rd Wine Festival 2014

Last weekend of September is traditionally reserved for a Wine Festival in Svečina. A village in North-East Slovenia with just a bit over 150 inhabitants has a long wine-making tradition, dating back to 12th century when this settlement was dominated by monks. Today Svečina is known for its petit beauty, hospitality of locals and a Wine festival, organized two times per year – in Spring and Autumn.

In September Wine Festival is held in the heart of the village. Families present their wines and other products on the main square where a visitor can taste delicious home-made specialities such as “Moving cake”, apples, honey, various brandies and of course a Špricar – white semi dry wine blended with sparkling mineral water.

Our mission kicked-off with a tasteful lunch – bratwurst and cabbage which gave us good basis and energy to visit the Tasting room where we spent most of the afternoon. But the festival is not exactly all about the wine, there are many other activities too. For example, if you like hiking, you can take part in organized Nordic walking tour around the area, children can participate in creative workshops and you can visit an exhibition of the history in Svečina castle. Or you simply visit all the stands, pick your favourite wine and enjoy the life.
