Salon Ranine is festival dedicated to indigenous Slovenian grape variety RANINA. It is one out of 8 indigenous grape varieties in Slovenia. (The other are: Ranfol, Modra Frankinja, Portugalka, Zelen, Klarnica, Vitovska grganja, Pinela and Žametovka)
For us Ranina tastes as light as muscat.
Who produce Ranina and who were winemakers at the event: Steyer Vina, Vina Tempus, Vina Fleisinger, Vinogradništvo Kolarič, Vinarstvo Hafner, Anina klet and Radgonske gorice.
At Master Class we were told a lot of interesting information. Prof. dr. Stanko Vršič told us that Ranina genetic is a cross between pinot and yellow muscat and has 44 official synonyms in the VIVC database. Today the wound matures on the 32nd days earlier than 43 years ago, which is the result of a rapid drop in quality parameters, which is why Vršič challenged participating winegrowers to consider planting the vine in less sunny locations. To extend the time maturation of the wound, also suggests monitoring its grafting on different bases.
How does Ranina taste? Klavdija Topolovec Špur, an oenologist from Radgonske Gorice told us that they grow Ranina in 68 hectares and they are the largest producer of Ranina. With its fruitiness, freshness, flowers and low acids, it is suitable for type and is an ingredient of both Srebrna Radgonska sparkling wine and bottled Janževec. From an organic vineyard on the 5-hectare Ranina estate in Črešnjevci is also the basis for the natural sparkling wine Pet-nat.
Tadeja Vodovnik Plevnik led the master class of seven participating winemakers with the corresponding six carefully selected wine pairings and snacks from RG bistro under the chef Aleksander. How does she describe Ranina? As a universal variety points out, the first must we get in Štajerska Slovenia is right from the Ranina. The wine is rich, gentle with acidity, with rich alcohol and extract. It has a very unique flower and aroma.
Who discovered RANINA? It was discovered by a family in the Radgonsko-Kapelske wine-growing region Clotar Bouvier around 1910 on the estate in Hercegovščak. It was first mentioned scientifically by Franz Zweifler in 1929, teacher and principal of the Regional Fruit and Wine School in Maribor, one of the leading experts in viticulture and winemaking of his time in Štajerska, who was also a consultant of the wine company Clotar Bouvier (1853–1930).
