Reflections on VieVinum 2026: Sustainability at the Heart of Austrian Wine
My visit to VieVinum 2026 was particularly inspiring because of the strong commitment of Austrian winemakers to sustainability. Among the many exhibitors, it was striking to see that the vast majority of wineries held organic certifications, demonstrating that organic viticulture in Austria is no longer a niche practice but is increasingly becoming the industry standard.
What impressed me most was the Nachhaltig Austria certification. This is Austria’s national sustainability certification for the wine sector, going far beyond organic production alone. It evaluates environmental performance, economic viability, social responsibility, biodiversity protection, resource efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and the long-term stewardship of vineyards and wineries. In essence, it represents a comprehensive approach to sustainability throughout the entire wine production process.
For us, the Nachhaltig Austria certification was one of the highlights of the fair. It illustrated that modern premium winemaking is no longer focused solely on producing outstanding wines, but also on acting responsibly toward the environment, employees, and future generations. VieVinum 2026 clearly demonstrated that sustainability has become one of the defining values of Austria’s wine identity.
